What’s News: A calendar of local events (2024)

Saturday, Aug. 24

A taco bar and bingo night will be hosted by Bikers for Jesus at the Rusk Civic Center, 555 Euclid St. in Rusk. The doors open at 4 p.m. with a 5 p.m. start set for bingo. All are welcome to play, but parents are encouraged to use their discretion regarding their children’s age and ability. Bingo cards are $10 each, with a three board per game and 10 game per card limit. Meal tickets are $10 each, with children under five being free. Mt. Vernon Methodist Church of Pert’s annual Community Ice Cream Social celebrates the beginning of school and the near end of summer. The public is invited to attend the event scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. The church is located at 1733 Anderson County Road 436, 9.9 miles south

of Frankston just off Hwy 155. There will be homemade ice cream in a variety of flavors along with toppings. For information about the church, visit the Mt Vernon Methodist Church of Pert Facebook page.

Monday, Aug. 26

The Rusk Independent School District’s Board of Trustees will meet in special session at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, to conduct a public hearing on the proposed 2024-2025 budget and tax rate. The meeting will be conducted at the RISD Administration Office, 203 E. 7th Street.

Tuesday, Aug. 27

The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Jacksonville Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Central Baptist Church, 1909 E. Rusk St. in Jacksonville. The public is invited to stop by and see who is hiring. The event is sponsored by the Chamber, Jacksonville Economic Development Corporation and Workforce Solutions.

The Jacksonville Independent School District’s Board of Trustees will meet in regular monthly session at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the JISD Administration Office, 800 College Street. A public hearing regarding the proposed 2024-2025 budget and tax rate will be conducted during this meeting.

Wednesday, Sept. 4

The Cameron-J. Jarvis Troup Municipal Library invites children up to age four, and their parents or care givers, to 1, 2, 3 Come Play with Me! At 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4. The event is intended to facilitate new friendships and to connect with local professionals in early childhood development. For questions, contact the library at 903-842-3101.

Saturday, Sept. 7

The Bluebonnet 4-H Club is hosting a meet and greet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Mud Creek Mercantile Market Day, 9688 E. SH 204. Current members and those interested in information or joining the club are encouraged to attend. For $5 per person, play a round of miniature golf on a 9-hole course. Proceeds benefit the Bluebonnet 4-H Club.

ONGOING

A city-wide prayer gathering is being hosted at 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at Hwy 69 Mission, 203 N. Jackson Street. Believers of all denominations are invited to join together to seek God’s face and his purpose.

The Jacksonville Kiwanis Club meets weekly at noon Thursdays in the large meeting room in the Jacksonville Chamber office, 307 E. Commerce. For information on the Kiwanis Club find the organization on Facebook.

Alanon Family Group meetings are held at 4 p.m. Thursdays at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1000 S. Jackson in Jacksonville. If you love someone with a drinking addiction, Alanon can help you. There are no dues or fees. For more information, call Elizabeth at 903-284-7311.

The Military Veteran Peer Network hosts regular meet and greet events 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at 804 S. Main St. in Jacksonville. They also meet at 6 p.m. the first and third Thursday of each month at the Lion’s Club building, 540 W. 6th St. in Rusk. The organization provides supportive fellowship for veterans and their families. For more information, contact Bradley Erickson, Peer Services Coordinator, at 903-721-2078.

The Poetry Club meets from 10 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of the month at the Jacksonville Public Library, 526 E. Commerce Street. The public is invited to visit, share their poems or just come and listen to the poems of others. No experience or commitment is necessary.

REMEMBER OR HONOR THE VETERANS IN YOUR LIFE. The Jacksonville Garden Club is selling commemorative bricks for veterans, both past and present, as a fundraising project. Information to be included on each brick includes the name of the service member with his or her rank, branch of service and years served. The bricks will be placed at Buckner Park’s Patriotic Pathway. The cost is $50 per brick. To order, contact Sandra Dickerson at 903-339-1395.

Explore Jacksonville is seeking volunteers of all ages and abilities to help at Love’s Lookout Park. For more information, contact 903-339-3320.

County Roads Rescue is accepting clean, bagged aluminum can donations between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Monday through Friday at the shelter, located at 601 Woodlawn Avenue in Jacksonville. Email countryroadsrescue@gmail.com to arrange a drop-off.

Cherokee County veterans are invited to apply for assistance with critical home repairs through Habitat for Humanity of Smith County. Funds provided assist with renovations to make veterans’ residences accessible, healthy and safe. For information or to apply, visit smithcountyhabitat.org.
