Wellsville is known for being the junction of many foothill streams including Dyke's Creek feeding the Genesee River from the east. The water from Hurricane Agnes in 1972 exceeded the capacity and banks of Dyke's Creek, producing a rapid and huge pool of water at the center of the village.

Benson visited the Fort on 13 November 1859 to appoint William H. Maughan as bishop of the Wellsville Ward, a position he held for over forty years. At this time they changed the town's name from Maughan's Fort to Wellsville in honor of Daniel H. Wells, second counselor to President Brigham Young.

History. Wellsville was platted in 1856, and named after Charles Wells who was the original owner of the land. A post office called Wellsville has been in operation since 1857.

Peter Maughan, sent to Cache Valley in 1856, founded a permanent settlement called Maughan's Fort, which became the present town of Wellsville. More settlers began to arrive and five towns (Providence, Mendon, Logan, Richmond, and Smithfield) were settled in 1859.
