The Spain Euro 2024 squad has been finalised, with manager Luis de la Fuente whittling his 29 preliminary players down to 26.
With Spain's opening game at Euro 2024 fast approaching, there are plenty of reasons to get excited about a side that may well be the most balanced for a long time. While La Roja have traditionally lacked players any more varied than pretty, passing midfielders, the likes of Nico Williams, Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal have been included this time and could play huge roles in the upcoming fixtures.
At just 16 years old, Yamal is the youngest player at the tournament and far from the only world-class talent in this squad. Pedri – a veteran now, at 21 – is fit enough to be included, Alvaro Morata is in his peak at 31, Alex Grimaldo has had the season of his life, winning the Bundesliga, and there's a case that Rodri might be the best of lot.
This is a transitional tournament for the Spanish, however, with 11 of the players registered having only 10 or fewer caps, and only Morata and 38-year-old Jesus Navas managing over 50. Now's the time for new talents to step up.
Despite their youth, Spain are one of the favourites – but they'll have to navigate their way through arguably the toughest Euro 2024 group, with 2021's winners Italy, 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Croatia and Albania as their first three opponents.
They'll have to do it without some of their biggest names. Barcelona pair Alejandro Balde and Gavi boss miss out through injury, while Kepa Arrizalaga, Pau Cubarsi, Pedro Porro, Jose Gaya, Pau Torres, Marcos Llorente, Oihan Sancet and perhaps most notably, PSG's Marco Asensio are all missing.
Spain's Golden Generation feels a million years ago now – and Qatar's chastening penalty shootout defeat to Morocco was the first in the tournament's history in which a single team failed to net from 12 yards. Now's the time to put things right and lay down a marker for how this country has evolved.

Spain manager: Luis de la Fuente
Luis de la Fuente has been part of the Spanish FA fabric for a decade as a Euros-winning manager of the Under-19s and then the U21s.As senior coach, he has mined both cohorts for players.
Since replacing Luis Enrique in 2022, the ex-Athletic Bilbao left-back has gone Basque to basics to make La Roja more direct, but possession is still paramount.
Spain's star player
Rodri
Rodri hadn't finished a competitive fixture on the losing side for club nor country in more than a year before the FA Cup final against Manchester United - a run that stretched back 60-plus matches to Spain's 2023 defeat to Scotland at Hampden Park.
The 27-year-old Manchester City midfielder is the fulcrum around which the myriad creative waifs sprinkle their magic.
Most likely to...
Play a literal child. Centre-back Pau Cubarsi turned 17 in January, but he's already a starter at Barcelona and can read the game better than compatriots decades older. Wideman Yamal, just 16 when the tournament commences, wears braces, lives at La Masia and, like his club-mate, can't drink, drive, vote or smoke.
Spain's youngest ever player, who scored on his debut, has the impudent left-footed brilliance of a Barça-reared diminutive Argentine you may have heard of. Against Brazil, Yamal shone to such an extent that he joined Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Andres Iniesta as Cules to receive a standing ovation from the Bernabeu.
Least likely to...
Give the ball away. Spain's possession obsession remains under De la Fuente, although the era of picking a vertically challenged midfielder as a false nine is over. He may even have discarded the 4-3-3 system to fit in another attacker.
What they hope will happen
A repeat of the Nations League.
What will happen
A repeat of the World Cup. Yes, again.
Kits
Home
There's not a lot going on but it draws on the classic template of Spain shirts of old. There will be some who adore this kit for its familiar look: others may be disappointed with the lack of imagination.
Adidas will stock the Spain Euro 2024 home kit.
Away
There's a lot going on here. Bright yellow and pale blue is one thing, but there's a striking red, too. It's not going to be everyone's cup of sangria… but others are going to love this top.
The Spain Euro 2024 away kit can be purchased at Adidas.
FAQs
How many players are Spain allowed to take to Euro 2024?
Luis de la Fuente will have the option to select 26 players for his Spain Euro 2024 squad. Despite UEFA's best efforts to reduce the squad size back to 23, teams rallied to ensure players didn't become overworked - and probably because they didn't want the added headaches of leaving certain stars out.
